VIDEO: Robot herds flock of sheep

Spot is a robot developed by Boston Dynamic, a leader in mobile robotics, and is a “nimble four-legged robot that can trot around your office, home, or outdoors.”

Spot

The robot maps its environment, senses and avoids obstacles, climbs stairs, and opens doors. It can also fetch you a drink.

The application for Spot in this video, however, is herding a flock of ewes.

It also has other benefits for agriculture, such as providing farmers with accurate and up-to-date yield estimates using features such as heat, LIDAR, gas and high-resolution camera sensors.

One of the companies involved in its development, Rocos, said Spot has been built to go where other robots can’t. The robot navigates rugged environments to capture data in real-time and feeds this data back into existing business systems.

Autonomy

“The age of autonomous robots is upon us. Our customers are augmenting their human workforces to automate physical processes that are often dull, dirty, or dangerous. I’m excited to be working with the world-class team at Boston Dynamics as we help organizations scale their adoption of robotics,” said David Inggs, CEO, Rocos.
