VIDEO: ‘If you have a sheep abortion on-farm, it is important to isolate the ewe straight away’

In this video, veterinary practitioner, Conor Geraghty, gives tips on how farmers can manage sheep abortion.

John Jenkins and Bernie Geraghty, who are participating in an information and awareness campaign run by XLVets, in conjunction with MSD Animal Health, which manufactures vaccines for the control of both toxoplasmosis and enzootic abortion, also feature in the video.

Top tips from Conor Geraghty:

  • If you have a sheep abortion on-farm, it is important to isolate the ewe straight away;
  • Contact your vet – Arrange to have samples taken and sent to the laboratory to determine the cause of abortion;
  • Clean and disinfect the single pen the ewe is in, before another ewe is put back into it;
  • If fostering a lamb, select a male instead of a female in case it is an infectious form of abortion – you do not want to introduce it to female replacements in the flock;
  • If test results confirm that a flock has enzootic abortion, your vet may be prescribe antibiotics as a treatment for that season in advance of vaccination the following year.
