A paddock grazing system is putting more money back in John O’Connell’s pocket.
By putting fencing infrastructure in place on his farm, he has recognised the benefits of doing so such as managing his grass better and growing a better higher-quality grass.
This has a knock-on effect on lamb performance by eliminating concentrate feeding and, in turn, saving money.
“I would have fenced under TAMS, both the home farm, which consists of 17 hectares and the outfarm, which would be equally the same amount of ground, another 17 hectares.”
“I have increased the number of permanent paddocks. There are twelve paddocks on this farm alone, then during the year, as needs be, those paddocks are split.”
“In most cases, it’s just permanent sheep wire fencing. The main reason for doing so was to manage the paddocks better. Back 7 or 8 years ago, the sheep decided where they wanted to go, now, I decide where the sheep wants to go. I’m growing more grass, but I’m also growing better quality grass.” he concluded.
