Tomás O'Leary - who resides in Co. Kerry - was named as the Teagasc Sheep Grassland Farmer of the Year in 2018.
He keeps a tight focus on managing and growing his grass, ensuring that his stock enters the paddock at the correct stage.
By doing this, he knows that after three days when his sheep are removed, his grass will be at 4cm in height. The paddocks are specifically laid out to facilitate this.
When there is good growth, the paddocks are further temporarily subdivided.
The daily ‘live-weight-gain’ of the lambs is the reason that Tomás concentrates his energy on the grassland.
“Grass is the cheapest form of feed to sheep so by utilising the grass correctly, lambs thrive better, they’re out the gate faster at a cheaper cost.
His farm walk is taking place on Wednesday, (June 19th ) at 7 pm in Rosnacarton, Beaufort, Co. Kerry. Eircode: V93 P9C7
