Kiernan Milling’s David Magee M.Agri.Sc discusses silage quality on farms.
Various studies conducted at Teagasc Grange have shown that each 1% drop in DMD requires an additional 3kgs of concentrates to support the same weight gain, according to the ruminant nutritionist.
Support the desired weight gain
With this in mind, it is important to know the feeding value of your silage and balancing it correctly to support the desired weight gain. For instance, with this 65 DMD silage to support a growth rate of 0.6kg/day, you will be required to feed 2kgs of concentrates.
With 75 DMD silage, feed 1kg of concentrate to support a growth rate of 0.6kg/day, David explained.
“Therefore, in order to know the feeding value of your silage and what weight gain can be achieved, it is of fundamental importance, to get your silage tested and balanced for the desired weight gain for each category of animal.”
