Teagasc & SheepNet National Facilitator - Dr. Tim Keady, hosted a group of farmers from SheepNet, that aims to increase sheep productivity.
“Europe is only 85% self-sufficient in sheep meat and we know that we could increase the number of lambs reared by ewes by 0.1 of a lamb."
"That’s equivalent to 64,000 tonnes of extra lamb that would bring self-sufficiency to from 85 up to 92%,”
The group visited two farms - host farmer John Curley highlighted the use of grass in the system to get lambs to slaughter off 100% grass; improving the prolificacy of the ewes and a higher number of lambs weaned off ewes.
Sheepnet co-ordinator Jean-Marc Gautier said, “We need to find solutions, and they do exist in Europe, we just have to find it and share it”.
Host farmer Kenneth Mathews explains why he got involved in SheepNET especially looking at mortality in lambs and what you can do to improve your farms.
