Based in Plymouth, in USA, Brian and Jill Houin are milking 2,200 cows on 36 Lely Astronaut robots; they farm 4,800 cows in total across three different holdings.
“Labour has been a big issue and that is one of the reasons why we put in the robots,” Brian explained.
“Nobody wants to milk cows anymore – robots take the milking process out of the equation.”
He uses information obtained from the robots to make farm management decisions. “We can take better care of our cows now than we could twenty years ago,” he explained.
