Dermot O'Connor finishes bulls all-year-round on his farm based in Co. Laois.
He purchased a balanced ration for the very first time this year and did so by forging a connection with Edward Cassidy - a member of Kiernan Milling’s technical sales team covering Meath; Westmeath; Laois and Offaly.
Dermot enlisted the help of David Magee M.Agri.Sc - Ruminant Nutritionist who visited the Laois-based holding to review its feeding programme.
With a bountiful supply of potatoes available at a low cost in his area, Dermot went in search of a product that was suitable to feed with this food crop.
The Ruminant Nutritionist suggested combining potatoes with Kiernan Milling's High-Maize Mix; the overall starch content amounted to 47% ( this figure includes sugars).
"I had the bulls up to about 5kgs of grass and they hit the ground running. Starting up on the meal, they got 1kg every four-five days." Dermot O' Connor explained in this video.
"I introduced 2kgs of potatoes straight away when they came in as well. As the potatoes went up a kg, the meal went up a kg."
"The bulls were out on grass earlier on and they got that six-weeks of grass; it really put a frame to them." Dermot as he also highlighted the inclusion of potatoes in the bull's diet." Dermot added.
