Martin Fleming runs a calf-to-beef enterprise outside Mountbellew in Co. Galway; he purchases Friesian calves, with a view to finishing these at 22-23 months of age.
Martin has been using Kiernan Milling’s milk replacer for four seasons now. “I am very happy with the milk replacer; there is a good shine on the calves with no sickness. It mixes well and it is very well-priced.” Martin said.
Calves will continue to receive milk replacer for the next 8-10-weeks and Martin has started to introduce Milky Calf Starter Pencils to their diet.
Milky Calf Starter Pencils contain live yeast and full-fat soya; its whey content eases the tradition at weaning from milk replacer to concentrate.
Martin is satisfied with the performance of last’s year progeny. They had the same dietary regime as the current crop of calves, grazed for two seasons and they were fed Kiernan Milling’s High-Maize mix from August until December when they were slaughtered.
The average carcass weight for the group was 375kgs, according to Martin.
