James O’Brien is studying a level-6 advanced certificate in dairy herd management at Clonakilty Agriculture College.
He selected this course to acquire the required skill-set to take over his family-run dairy farm, which is home to 90 spring-calving cows.
James, who is farming in partnership with his parents, intends to increase grass utilisation, incorporate clover into swards, breed more efficient, higher-EBI cows and make the enterprise more labour efficient once he completes his current area of study.
