Approximately 3,000 milking goats are farmed on commercial enterprises across the country.
Greenfield Goat Farm was established in 2002 by Declan Goldrick with the purchase of seventy goats.
The enterprise – which is based outside Kilnaleck, in Co. Cavan – is now home to 500 milking goats with an average yield of 3.3-litres/day.
Goats are housed all-year-round and kidding takes place in January and June.
“We buy in 90% of our feed and we get our silage from other farms.” explained the goat farmer.
Silage reserves are then analysed by Kiernan Milling. “We get the best diet made for a goat for the best performance in milk yields and for kidding,” added Goldrick.
Conor McCaffery B.Agr.Sc – Technical Sales at Kiernan Milling – said: “This is a large farming enterprise – 500 goats require a lot of nutritional support in order to achieve this high level of performance.”
“For example, energy in early lactation is so important, as well as altering the diet based on different silage results,” he added.
