The battle against a gorse/forest fire on the Slieve Bloom Mountains continues today, with videos released highlighting the extent of the damage.
The video above, posted by the Offaly Fire & Rescue Service, shows the fire spreading at a rapid rate and engulfing everything it touches. Offaly Fire & Rescue released the drone footage above to show people the extent of the damage caused by the fire and urged people to stay away from the area, as both Laois and Offaly Fire and Rescue battle to control the blaze.
“Please please please stay away from the area. DO NOT TRAVEL to "have a look”, they urged in a Facebook post.
The fire originally started on Wednesday morning and spread over 3 miles since. The fire, which is being dubbed the biggest in the country, is currently located between Cadamstown and Kinnity and the fire site is estimated to be over four miles wide now.
Offaly Fire & Rescue Service also posted another message of warning to those contemplating starting a fire.
“Again we cannot emphasis the importance of not disposing of cigarettes out of car windows when travelling...We are asking that you do not light any fires, either for farming or any other reason.”, their post read.
“As we are currently involved in a significant forest fire we ask the public to assist us in limiting the potential for further outbreaks.” it continued.
Offaly Fire & Rescue service say they are finally getting the fire under control, with the help of the Air Corps and helicopters, who are dropping water on it. It has been warned that blanket bogs and hen harrier habitats are in serious danger as a result of the fire.
