Alan Hughes has a predominantly grass-based farm with low-medium inputs. “Grass is the focus; we can get cows out early and leave them out late."
He is stocked at about 2.6 cows/ha and the farm itself is supplying the feed for the winter and milking production.
He aims to do over 500kg of milk solids and plans to grow that further.
The old parlour was a Dairymaster, and with the elimination of quotas, he expanded the herd and decided that an upgrade to the parlour was needed.

Good ‘cow-flow’ was important for Alan as he wanted a smooth changeover. He said: “The one thing that I have noticed with this parlour is that cows are extremely relaxed”.
He opted for automatic baling, udder-wash, ACRs, a diversion line and drafting. “The pressure is gone,” he concluded.
