Seamus Connolly runs a 60-cow spring-calving grass-based system in Co. Monaghan.
His herd averages over 500kgs of milk solids per cow and all heifers calve down at 24-months of age.
This year, his 3-week submission rate was over 80%, while the farm achieved a 65% six-week calving rate.
Kiernan Milling’s heifer developer range, a 22% soya-based feed with a high cereal component and a premium calf mineral pack included at a 2kg feeding rate, has made a difference on the Monaghan native’s dairy enterprise.
He has been working with the Longford-based company —which was established in 1979 — for the past number of years.
Reach "full genetic potential"
In this video, Susan Dudley M.Agri.Sc — Research and Development Nutritionist at Kiernan Milling — highlights the importance of correct management techniques in order to ensure that dairy heifers will reach their “full genetic potential”.
“Your dairy heifers are your next generation herd; they are your future cows and your future profit.”
“Protein is so important in heifer rearing as it is needed for proper skeletal development, but also for proper mammary gland development, which is what will influence their future milk yield,” she concluded.
