Ciara Flavin doesn’t see any other future but one in the family business. She helps run her family’s Tillage and beef farm in Grange Co. Limerick.
The 19 year old farmer works not only on her parent’s farm but also in their butcher shop too. This is located nearby in Castletroy and they supply their own beef to the shop.
They currently farm just over 250 heifer cattle, which are all finished on the farm. They hold various different breeds with continentals and others also. These heifers are bought in at 7 months and upon reaching over 380 kgs they are finished inside. They place an emphasis on traceability and the farm to fork motto.
The farm consists of just over 160 acres of tillage land, with the family growing winter wheat and spring barley (plus more) this year. She is currently studying a two year green certificate course in Pallaskenry Agricultural college in Co. Limerick. She hopes to complete this so that one day she can fully take the reigns of the farm. This is her dream.
