Justin Walsh's 100-cow herd is split 60:40 between spring and autumn calving, with bulls sold once they reach 12-months - 450kgs (live) and heifers finished at about eighteen-months, killing out at 350kgs (carcass weight).
75% of the breeding females are AI'd to Limousin and Simmental sires, while a five-star Limousin bull is used to mop up the remaining cows.
Justin, Co. Meath - who is an ICBF Weight Technician - weighs his cattle on a regular basis. His herd was impacted by worm infestation up to three years ago, with a belief that this reduced thrive by about 20% - which is equivalent of one weaned calf on the farm, every three weeks.
Albex 10%Albex 10% is used on the Meath-based farm as part of its herd health programme; the product is used on calves during the first grazing season for roundworms and lungworms and post-housing ten-weeks on all the animals in the herd including cows and calves to give cover for fluke and worms.
Albex 10% kills roundworms; lungworms; tapeworms and adult liver fluke, along with roundworm and fluke eggs. The product is licenced for beef and dairy and sheep also; it has a 60-hour meat withdrawal and a 14-day withdrawal in beef.
"Albex 10% has been used as part of our herd health protocol. Bulls are achieving about 1.1kg/day and overall, farm performance has improved again." Justin said.
Speaking about the product, Noel McGrath - Key Account Manager - Chanelle said: "Albex is the number one albendazole in Ireland. It's very suitable for dairy herds and it covers roundworms; lungworms and adult liver fluke."
"It also has a very short withdrawal period of sixty hours. Based on recent research, the average cost of an outbreak of lungworm on a 100-dairy cow herd is €163/cow/lactation."
Ciarán Lenehan - Key Account Manager - Chanelle outlined: "When using Albex, it's important to have our equipment calibrated correctly and to dose based on the weight of the animals."
