IFA dairy chairman, Tom Phelan, has said that dairy farmers care for all their animals, including calves, and adhere to the highest welfare standards.
The farm organisation has developed a dairy calf policy which sets out the responsibilities for farmers, industry, state agencies and the Government.
It said that in recent months, it has been working with all stakeholders to progress its proposals.
‘Full rigours of the law’
“There must be zero-tolerance towards any form of cruelty to calves.”
“If anybody has information about any abuse or cruelty by an individual or individuals, they must report it to the authorities.”
“We expect the authorities to apply the full rigours of the law,” Phelan concluded.
