Catherina meets Yvonne Carton, a 9-year-old dairy farming star from Cork! Yvonne & her family milk 180 cows.

Name: Yvonne Carton

Age: 9-years-old.

Location: Co. Cork.

When did you start farming? I started farming when I was four-years-old. I loved it so much ever since the beginning. I have always enjoyed being outdoors surrounded by nature.

Tell me a little bit about your farm, please? We do both dairy and beef farming; we are now in our fourth-generation. We have our own farm and also have two more farms rented. I hope to be running the farm sometime in the future. On our farm, we milk 180 dairy cows and we also have drystock too. My Dad also does Agricultural Contracting including slurry; hedge-cutting; baling and wrapping. On our farm, we have lots of sheds were the animals sleep in bad weather and the winter period.

What are some of your jobs on the farm? I have numerous jobs to do on the farm. I feed the calves in the winter-time and make sure that they have straw and ration and to ensure that they are after drinking all their milk. I help mum milk the herds of cows in the evenings; during the weekend and also on school holidays. I have a few hens that I got at different summer shows in Cork, so I also feed them in the evenings. My little cat Robin and my dog Trudy must also be looked after. When the cows are finished milking, I scrape down all the cubicles. I go to the mart some Saturday where we have calves for sale. I love seeing all the different breed s there. In the summer, I go to Agricultural Shows and enter my dog into the dog shows. I save any pocket money I get from the farm and buy a couple of new hens every summer. In the summer, I also cycle my bike to the field to round-up the cows for milking. I have learned all the different breeds of cattle at this stage too. Whenever we go for a drive, I am able to name out nay cattle I may see out in a field.

What is your favourite thing about farming? I enjoy milking the cows because I get to see my favourite cows daily but I am also getting experience for when I am older so that I can run the farm at some stage in the future. I have my own pet cow called ‘Pippa’; she is a Jersey. Pippa is my favourite cow because she is light-brown in colours and eats ration out of my hand. I love John Deere tractors so much. They are my favourite out of all the brands.

How you always wanted to farm? I have always wanted to be a farmer and I feel very comfortable in wellies and overalls every-day. I cannot wait unit I finish school so that I can farm all the time. I want to go to Agricultural College in Clonakilty when I am older to study for my Green Certificate.
