Denise O’Donovan, a young farmer, has responded to Minister’s Creed open letter to farmer protesters.
“What about us young farmers? Our futures are on the line. Farms that have been established throughout the years by grandparents, great-grandparents etc for us. We are been given no other choice only to be driven off our land.
A base price plus 20c/kg is no good to us; the base price can drop as quick as anything and we will be back to square one. Do you think we are stupid enough to swallow up this decision?
You wouldn’t give this offer to a 2-year-old child. What about the cost of production? What an insult for the farmers for their years of hard work to get the cattle to where they are. This is just not good enough.
Think of the people trying to make a living/future out of this. People trying to pay bills / run a house/family/ mortgage. If you took us, farmers, seriously, we may not be getting labelled with the destruction of the beef sector.
We don’t want to become millionaires - we want to be treated fairly and get a fair price for our hard-earned work but that’s obviously too much to ask for.
If you and your party were not happy with your salaries, ye would have the country shut down but it’s ok to treat the farmers, the way ye are. Ye may as well just be standing back laughing at us!
Young farmers being driven off their family’s farms. No future secured for us. Do you think this is acceptable??”
