Aldi and The Irish Angus Youth Development Programme (YDP) is calling for entries to the 2019 inaugural ‘Aldi Irish Angus YDP All Ireland Junior Stockperson of the Year’ competition.
There is a €3,000 total prize fund for elite junior Angus breeders between 12 – 16* years old, with first prize taking home €1,000, second claiming €500, third winning €300 and fourth to ninth winning €200 each.
Athlone, Charleville, and Bonniconlon will host the three qualifying heats over the Summer, with nine finalists advancing to compete to be crowned All Ireland Junior Stockperson of the Year at the Iverk Show on August 24th, 2019 in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny.
Each finalist will have to prove their stock-person skills in a specially designed preparation ring, where they will be tested on their general knowledge of the Angus breed, preparation and presentation of their animal and their showing ability of their animal.
Also speaking at the announcement, ABP Ireland Livestock Manager Paul Matthews said, “We are absolutely delighted to be associated with this year’s Junior Stockperson of the Year competition.”
“Supporting the beef production specialists of tomorrow is very important to us and this competition is a great example of how young people can hone their stock person skills whilst also learning more about the Angus breed in a very practical and engaging way.”
“We would encourage any young person with an interest in Angus and in showing cattle to get involved,” he concluded.
