Michael grew Hybrid Barley for the first time last year and was very happy with the performance. He grew Bazooka, which achieved 4.1tonnes per acre. Michael believes the greater yields were due to using Hybrid Barley and spoke of his happiness at the prize, stating he “very happy to receive this prize from Seedtech”.
The third and final competition winner revealed, was Pat Keenan from Co. Kildare.
Pat runs a mixed tillage and suckler farm near Rathangan, Co. Kildare and has never previously grown Hybrid barley. He admitted he was very keen to try the crop on his farm over the coming months.
“I’ve been listening to how other farmers are getting on with Hybrids and hearing good things; so I’ve been planning on trying them out. This prize gives me the perfect opportunity to do that.” he said.
As the newest Hybrid Barley to come to market, based on the recently released 2019 DAFM Recommended List results, all three growers will be sowing the winter barley variety with the best combination of yield, straw and grain quality, and disease resistance.
