Today marks St. Swithin’s Day.

Wednesday, July 15th marks Saint Swithin’s Day, with an old belief that if it rains today, this will carry unchanged for the next forty days and forty nights.

According to folklore, if it is fair today, forty days and nights of such weather conditions will follow.

The superstition dates back since records began and revolves around the life and teachings of Swithun, an Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester, who passed away in 862 AD.

The following weather rhyme is associated with the annual feast:

“St Swithin’s Day, if it does rain
Full forty days, it will remain
St Swithin’s Day, if it be fair
For forty days, t'will rain no more."

Met Éireann’s forecast

It will be mostly cloudy and rather misty today, according to the national forecaster, who said there will be patchy drizzle in the north and east of the country.

However, long dry spells are set to develop as the day progresses – especially in the south and south-east of Ireland.

It will reach between 16 to 21 degrees in a moderate west or north-west breeze.

It will be mild and humid tonight, with mist in many areas, according to Met Éireann.

Dry conditions, but patchy light rain and drizzle will impact coastal counties with lows of 12 to 15 degrees nationwide.
