Weather: Risk of thunder with plenty of rain this weekend

This morning will be generally cloudy but dry in most places, according to Met Éireann. Outbreaks of rain are expected in the southwest later in the morning and will gradually spread eastwards through the afternoon and evening.

Rain will clear eastwards tonight with patchy rain in northern places overnight. It will be mostly dry elsewhere with patches of mist and fog. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees in light to moderate south to southwest winds.

Saturday

The national forecaster anticipates that tomorrow morning will be dry in most areas, but rain will spread across the country in the afternoon, turning heavy at times, especially in western areas. Outbreaks of rain will become largely confined to southern and eastern counties early on Saturday night with clear spells developing elsewhere.

South to southwest winds will be light at first, but are expected to freshen throughout the day, becoming strong near coasts. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees throughout the day and night-time temperatures dropping to between 2 and 5 degrees Celsius.

Sunday

The current forecast suggests Sunday will be a cold showery day. Some showers will be heavy with hail and a risk of isolated thunder. Showers will gradually clear eastwards on Sunday night and it will become mainly dry with clear spells.

Sunday night will be cold with temperatures predicted to drop to between -1 and +2 degrees. There will be widespread frost and a risk of ice in certain areas. Winds will be mainly light, becoming south to southwest by morning.
