Celebrating its 75th anniversary, this years show promises to be a great day out for all the family, young and old are sure to be catered for. Taking place on the 24th of August, and with prize money of over €40,000, continued efforts are underway to get this years show picture perfect. With a committee of over 200 and almost 500 classes, a lot goes on behind the scene and Chairperson, Sean Farrelly and Secretary, Mary Gaynor work hard to ensure all goes without fault.
The show committee are 12 months getting ready for this years show and this is evident in the list of attractions on the table for the 2016 show. Whether its cattle, horses, sheep, poultry, dogs, home industries, childrens classes or art & craft is your thing, there is something for everyone from National Finals to National Qualifiers, this years prize list is available online.
Firmly established as one of Irelands most impressive celebrations of farming, food and rural life, Virginia Show - which last year attracted almost 15,000 visitors - showcases top quality livestock, food and drink and rural living at its most vibrant, there is an all-encompassing range of events to suits all tastes, up to 300 trade stands, live entertainment, artisan food producers, cookery demonstration by award winning chef Neven Maguire, fashion shows, sheep shearing demonstrations and childrens entertainment, it is the definitive lifestyle event.
The voluntary work carried out by show stewards is without question a credit, you are sure to be welcomed with a smile as not a stone is left unturned to ensure visitors to the show this year have a safe and enjoyable day. Free parking minutes from the showgrounds and competent traffic controls will make sure you have no difficulty in getting to your destination without delay.
The importance of the economic contribution of agricultural shows cannot be underestimated, agriculture in Cavan supports thousands of jobs in the rural economy, both directly in food & drink processing and also in the wider agri-industry, including input suppliers, agricultural contractors, jobs in auctioneering, transport and engineering and in accountancy, legal, veterinary and other advisory services. Diageo Baileys Irish Champion Dairy Cow
One of the highlights of the show is the €10,000 Diageo Baileys Irish Champion Dairy Cow Competition in Association with Glanbia Ingredients Ireland.
The winner of the Diageo Baileys Irish Champion Dairy Cow Competition in Association with Glanbia Ingredients Ireland will be reassured that they are doing something right as they scoop one of the leading prizes awarded to any dairy animal.
Although this was not the only attraction on the day. There are also numerous other cattle shows going on along with sheep and horse.
International Limousin Congress
Virginia Show welcomes the International Limousin Congress to the town. Every two years an International Limousin Congress (ILC) is hosted in a different country. It represents the world’s premier gathering of Limousin breeders and Limousin enthusiasts where friendships are forged, ideas are exchanged and lasting memories are created. In 2014 a strong contingent from Ireland attended the congress in Argentina. The Congress is the perfect vehicle to exchange breed views, research, market and technical information. Read more here
You'll be spoilt for choice as you wander through the quality trade stands brimming with lovely things to buy for home, garden, fashion, artwork or jewellery. The Food Hall has beautifully produced gifts, clothes and food while the Trade Mall has everything from food to furnishing, coats to ceramics and shoes to sweaters.
Trade stand space
Not surprisingly, most companies keep on returning to Virginia Show and they are offered first refusal on their site. Information packs are sent out during the year and we are almost always oversubscribed so please get your application in early. Priority goes to existing trade stands that were present last year.

Virginia Show promotes all that is good in rural Ireland; it has expanded from its agricultural base to hold an interest for all the family. Virginia Agricultural Show has long been renowned as an event with visitors from all over Ireland and the UK traveling to Cavan every August. So note the date, Wednesday 24th of August, definitely one for the diary.
