“This condition is generally seen when cattle are housed in winter and feeding at barriers.”

Cavan-based vet, Gerard McGovern, recently stumbled across a case of neck bursitis in a mature cow.

He explained that this was caused by continuous trauma to the neck area, which led to the irritation of the underlying bursa and consequent build-up of fluid.

In a post on his popular Instagram account, the vet explained: “This condition is generally seen when cattle are housed in winter and feeding at barriers.”

“Bursitis is generally a benign, pain-free condition in cattle, but occasionally can be painful, particularly when the bursa becomes infected.”

“Removing the animal from the offending feed barrier normally resolves the problem but sometimes drainage is required. Surgical intervention is also required at times.” the post concluded.

McGovern shares the “adventures of a large animal vet” on his Instagram which has in excess of 30,300 followers. He graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1977 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine and now runs a mixed animal practice in Cavan.
