It's that time of the year again and the cows have been dried off and have been dosed for Fluke and worms.

As cows were been dosed, I condition scored each cow and checked for missing ear tags. I have six empty cows and I have decided to sell four of them and keep two and carry them over to next year. They are good cows and I want to give them one more chance. But if they don't hold in calf after the first 2 serves next year they will be sold.

The Week Ahead -
As I have said, I have condition scored the cows so now, I will split them into groups and feed the lighter cows a few kgs of meal. Cows have also been put on pre-calving minerals. Overall I'm happy with cow performance this year. The cost of production has gone up with more meal being fed during the drought. But overall, I'm still happy.

Name: Aran Connell
Farm: Dairy farm, milking 140 Holstein Friesian’s in farm partnership with his father.
Location: Mizen Head, West Cork.
Performance: 17 litres, 4.78 Butterfat, 3.99 Protein with SCC of 210 and a diet of 4kgs nuts in the parlour and 8kgs of beet.

This Week -
Cows are still milking very well. My average seems high, but most of the low yielders have now been taken out and dried off.

Cows were out on grass by day during this recent dry spell. It is great to have them out, even for a few hours. It helps to give time for the liming cubicles and other jobs. We pulled more fodder beet yesterday and there's probably a third of it left to be done on another day.

The Week Ahead -
This time of year is relatively quiet, so we're going prepping for the band of calves that will be born next January.

That means penning up the calf housing and servicing the auto calf feeder. This will be our 3rd year with it (The auto feeder) and we definitely wouldn't do without it now. It takes the work out of calf feeding. 70 cows are scanned for calving in January, including some sexed semen heifers. So, we will be kept busy and now is the time to prepare.

Normally when sexed semen is used, we find heifers can calve down 10 days earlier than their due date.

Name: Christy McCarthy
Farm: 55 cows (35 Ped Holsteins and 25 Ped Jersey) on 60-acres.
Location: Shanaway East, Balineen Co. Cork.
Performance: Fat 4.06 , Protein 3.68, Lactose 4.69, SCC 93, Avg SCC 121.

This Week -
Things are picking up and up as the weeks go on.

Four cows calved this week, unfortunately, one calf died at birth and there was nothing we could do about it. We scanned 10 cows this week, mostly late calvers. Cows have been sent to the mart to make sure they're not in calf, as we would rather be safe than sorry.

The Week Ahead -
As more cows calf and the cows get used to the diet feeding, the yield in the bulk tank and yield per cow is increasing.

We will get a better picture as we are milk recording this week. With more cows to calf and more to AI the work never stops.
