Calving down the first of the herd, leading to better milk yields and solids, with cows now housed inside full-time. Get it all on this week's Dairy Update below!

Name: Christy McCarthy
Farm: 55 cows (35 Ped Holsteins and 25 Ped Jersey) on 60-acres.
Location: Shanaway East, Balineen Co. Cork.
Performance: Fat 4.74, Protein 3.84, Lactose 4.68, SCC-173, Avg SCC 137.

This Week -
It’s only now that we are seeing the cows and heifers getting used to the indoor diet, with the freshly calved cows really driving on yield.

A lot of the calved cows are doing well over 30 liters at the moment. On Saturday evening, we dried off 5 cows as they were cows I bought during the year. They automatically got an antibiotic and a sealer, just to be safe. Another two cows calved at the weekend and one last night. All calved with no problems and calves get 2.5 litres of colostrum straight away after they are born.

The heifers are in about three weeks now, so they will be dosed for fluke and worms to make sure they get the weight gain per day.

The Week Ahead -
In the coming week, We hope a lot of heifers will come into heat. The vet will then be called out to clean out any cow that hasn’t yet come into to heat

Name: Aran Connell
Farm: Dairy farm, milking 140 Holstein Friesian’s in farm partnership with his father.
Location: Mizen Head, West Cork.
Performance: 17 litres, 4.70 Butterfat, 3.88 Protein, SCC 180
Diet: 4kgs dairy ration, 8kgs beet, 1kg distillers grains

This Week -
Cows are continuing to milk well.

We have a few cows calved now, so that's also helping to keep the average up. We should hit the 500kg of milk solids per cow supplied to the creamery at end of this month.

Cows were out any dry day that came, but now we have pulled the plug and they are in full time now. All cattle were housed this week, except one batch of weanlings which will be housed in a few days.

We have fed 450 bales to date, with about 300 left so we shouldn't have any pit opened until Christmas week.

The Week Ahead -
Next week will all be about dosing cattle, clipping tails and drying off a few more cows.

We milk right through winter and will have 30 to 40 cows milking for Christmas this year. Once the cows start calving from the 10th of Jan on, we will dry off the remaining cows.
