Top-quality pedigree herd to be dispersed

A dispersal sale of top-quality pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle will take place at Killmalock Mart on Saturday, March 21st, at 1pm.

The animals are from Curraghtarsna Angus, which is in the top 10% of herds in the country.

What’s on offer?

  • 5-star stock bull;
  • 4 bulls – 12-16-months-old;
  • 5 bulls – 8-months-old;
  • 6 cows with calves at foot;
  • 6 in-calf cows;
  • 8 maiden heifers.

The owner

Liam Burke from Curraghtarsna, Cashel, Co. Tipperary, has been breeding these animals for the last three years after taking over his mother’s farm. The farm had no stock when he took the reins, so he decided to establish a pedigree Angus herd.

He decided on this breed due to them being less labour intensive than other breeds – They are polled, which mitigates the need to dehorn them and they’re easy-calved which meant the calving season did not interfere with Liam’s part-time job at the time.

“I’d very few health issues with them, they’re a hardy breed of animal. They all pretty much calved on their own,” he told That’s Farming.

Why sell?

Burke has decided to disperse the herd due to increased work commitments and changes in his personal life.

He has recently changed from a part-time self-employed position to a full-time public sector job. He and his partner, Karen, had a child 14 months ago and was also involved in a horse-riding accident. “Something had to give. I just can’t dedicate the time to it.”

Breeding

Most of the breeding females are from the well-known Carrigroe herd (the Dakota & Kian cow family) and the Goulding herd (the Penny, Princess, Missie and Tibbie cow family). All bulls have rings and are fertility-tested.

The Irish Angus Cattle Society member said: “They all came from good stock, so we don’t have any bad animals.”

“If there was something wrong with an animal, I wouldn’t knowingly sell it to anyone,” the Tipperary native concluded.
