Denis Cullinane's January-2013-born Friesian cow defied the odds, by giving birth to a set of healthy triplet calves yesterday (Wednesday, January 23rd).
This is the first triplet birth on Cullinane's dairy farm which is based in Co. Limerick; the trio is sired by an Aberdeen-Angus stock bull.Â
Speaking to That's Farming, Vicki - Denis' daughter - said: "Dad assisted with the delivery of the calves; we got a major surprise. The three bull calves will be hand-reared and sold."
It's believed that the odds of a cow giving birth to triplet calves are over 105,000/1, while the chances of the calves being of the same sex and healthy are less than one in 400,000 births.Â
