Top call of over €5,260 for commercial heifer

The sale-topper at the NI Commercial Cattle Exhibitors’ Club’s annual young stars show and sale, which was held on Friday, February 21st, came in the form of Jack Smyth’s Belgian-Blue-cross heifer.  

Hitting the £4,500 (approximately €5,260) price-tag, this full ET sister to the reserve champion, a Blue-sire steer, which sold to Blair Duffton and Gareth Small for £3,550, which was also presented for sale by the young breeder, caught the eye of JCB Commercials.

Jenifer Hyslop from Stirling in Scotland, tapped out Alan Veitch’s Charolais-sired steer as her overall champion of the show; he went on to sell for £3,100.

Other highlights of the day included;

  • Sean Doyle’s Limousin-sired heifer – £3800 to Mr Colin Woodside;
  • Alan Veitch’s Charolais-sired heifer – £3400 to Mr G Mulholland;
  • Jack Smyth’s Blue-sired steer – £3200 to Mr Blair Duffton;
  • A&A Callaghan’s Blue-sired heifer – £3100 to Mr Gary Bell;
  • Williamson family’s Charolais-sired heifer -£3000 to Andrew Ewing Scotland;
  • Williamson family’s Blue-sired heifer -£2700 to Mr. F Gormley;
  • Williamson family’s Blue-sired heifer -£2550 to Mr Colin Woodside;
  • William Hall’s Limousin-sired heifer – £2500 to Mckinstry Farms;
  • Alan Burleigh’s Blue-sired heifer – £2300 to Mr Stephen O’Kane.

Summary 

A spokesperson for NI Commercial Cattle Exhibitors’ Club said: “A total of 47 cattle sold out of 53 to an average £1751; there were five cattle exported to the UK and three cattle exported to Ireland.”
