Teagasc Biodiversity Conference

The Teagasc Biodiversity Conference; Farmland Conservation with 2020 Vision, is taking place over two days at the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise. The conference is addressing how the agriculture sector has responded to agricultural, environmental and ecological policy objectives, and how prepared the sector is for similar policy objectives post 2020.

Teagasc focus on increasing awareness of Biodiversity which includes our native flora, fauna and habitats in which they exist. The Irish landscape, with its associated biodiversity, has been shaped by millennia of agricultural activity, with nature providing the raw material, because so much of Ireland is farmed, Irish wildlife or biodiversity depends on farmland habitats.

Opening the conference yesterday, Wednesday, 21 October, Professor Gerry Boyle, Teagasc Director highlighted the importance of sustainable agricultural production systems, including economic, environmental and ecological sustainability. On the first day of the conference, the particular focus was on Locally-led Agri-environment schemes, and the theme of High Nature Value Farmland.

At the Biodiversity conference today, Thursday, the focus is on Ecosystem Products and Services and Enhancing Biodiversity in the Wider Countryside. Dr Daire Ó hUallacháin a Research Ecologist with Teagasc, and one of the organisers of the conference, said: “It is great to get an overview of what progress has been made in relation to halting the decline in farmland biodiversity. Certainly challenges lie ahead, but this conference is helping to identify what efforts are needed to address these challenges and thus ensure sustainable agricultural systems.”

The latest evidence and research on current and emerging policies and practices and policies that affect farmland biodiversity are being presented. A copy of the proceedings from the two day conference can be viewed at
