All graduating elementary, high school and college students in The Philippines are required to plan at least ten trees as a “mandatory prerequisite for graduation.”
The bill - the Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act – was approved recently and will be sent to the Senate for action.
525 billion trees
Its aim is to promote and pursue environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation for poverty reduction and food security.
In an official statement, a spokesperson said that this will encourage “the planting of indigenous species, taking into account the location, climate and topography of the area.”
It is estimated that over the course of one generation, the bill will be responsible for 525 billion trees planted.
