With the tillage crisis now in the rear-view mirror one of the knock-on effects has been a shortage of straw for sale throughout the country. Its placed a high demand on the bedding product and suppliers are now stating that much of their stock is already gone.
Farmers are now being quoted €45 for 8x4x4 bales of barley straw. Squares bales of barley straw are being quoted on Done Deal from €2-€3 each.
Many straw dealers in the Munster area are now reporting that they are out of stock.
There does seem to be some stocks of wheaten straw available.
Farmers and suppliers are looking to the UK but prices are said to be rising there with UK suppliers knowing that Irish farmers are now facing shortages and driving up prices.
