Reading the farming media headlines in recent days it seems clear that 2018 is going to be the year of the fodder crisis. The Department seem to not want to acknowledge the looming crisis
FF’s Charlie McConalogue has said that Minister Creed is walking us into a fodder crisis and farmers we have talked to have overwhelming told us they are worried about the winter ahead.
There is, however, another crisis that’s looming a straw crisis. Due to poor harvests and bad weather our stocks are down and farmers that That’s Farming have talked to are without adequate supplies.
Indeed 63% of polled farmers said will not have enough straw this winter.
A further 68% of farmers expressed worries about access to straw.
The shortage is forcing hauliers and suppliers to look to England, Scotland and even Spain. Prices are of course rising all the time.
Last year the straw shortage forced farmers to look to the UK market but with supplies there lowering its creating an atmosphere of fear.
The issue raises the question do we need a crisis fund for straw too?
