Status orange wind warning for the entire country

Met Éireann has issued a status orange wind warning for the entire country.

It has warned that there is a “significant risk” of coastal flooding due to the combination of high spring tides and storm surge.

This warning is valid in Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Donegal and Kerry since 5am this morning (Monday, January 13th) until 9pm tonight.

“Southerly winds will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80 km/h with gusts generally up to 130 km/h, higher in exposed areas.”

Meanwhile, the alert came into effect in Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford at 8am this morning (Monday, January 13th) and will remain in place until 3pm this afternoon.

“Southerly winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 70 km/h with gusts of 100 to 120 km/h, higher in exposed areas.” Met Éireann stressed.

Extreme winds and heavy rain 

In a tweet, this morning, (Monday, January 13th), Met Éireann said: “Storm Brendan will bring extreme winds and heavy rain today.”

“Status orange wind warnings in force for all counties with status Red warnings in operation for marine areas.”

“Winds may reach stronger levels locally & for limited time periods. Gale force southerly winds will extend countrywide with severe and damaging gusts.”

“Heavy rain will extend from the Atlantic, thundery at times.” the tweet added.
