Making up a feed to suit the requirements of a dairy herd, returning to Cavan and learning how a business develops its products – see Sophie's update here.

Sophie Bell - a Cavan native - is studying a BSc Hons in Agriculture with Animal Production Science at Harper Adams University – here is her next submission.

I had a wonderful Christmas at home, taking a break from college; it was a great few weeks off, catching up with everyone and getting back onto the farm to work.

I am back in full swing now at college, for semester two; there’s always plenty to be at between everything.

Currently, the assignment we are working on now is about making up a dairy feed ration using silage samples we tested in the lab; we make up a feed to suit the requirements of a specific herd of dairy cows. Last week, we were outside looking at farm buildings for ventilation, preventing the occurrence of respiratory diseases.

We were locomotion scoring cattle for lameness and analysing and testing milk samples and plenty of other stuff. Another thing – we are seeing a stretch in the evenings which is a great sign – you can’t beat the long evenings!!

How’s my job at Herdsy going?

Some time ago, I was asked by Herdsy if I would be interested in working as a liaison for their upcoming farming brand. I have taken on this opportunity, working with them throughout my spare time in between the farm and college work.

So far, I’m enjoying working with Herdsy; it’s a new product to the market mainly aimed towards beef cattle. There’s so much technology for precision farming in the dairy industry, so it’s great that there is finally something for the beef sector!

As we all know, profitability is a major issue for beef farmers; Herdsy allows farmers to track their profitability, per animal, daily, weekly and monthly, giving the farmer tailored reports for costs and breakeven points.

It calculates the growth rate of each animal and compares it against Benchmark, it also gives advanced grazing management, Geofencing and lots more - all at an inexpensive price.

When will the product be available for consumers? It is currently under testing and we are looking for people to demo it; we are currently taking pre-orders for it.

It’s a great opportunity to be able to work with Herdsy as I can get a proper insight into how a business develops its product.

I will be taking over That’s Farming Snapchat account - @thatsfarming -on Friday, March 1st – stay tuned!
