Pedigree Charolais breeder, Niall Canning, recently appeared on TG4’s Underdog GAA series for aspiring county footballers who never previously made the grade, as originally reported by us here and here.
The Dumcliff/Rosses Point GAA man battled his way through two trial matches and some further friendly games, before being chosen to face four-time All-Ireland Champions, Dublin, in the penultimate game of the series on October 19th.
Despite the best efforts of the Sligo farmer who started the game at wing forward, the Underdogs team succumbed to the might of Dublin, losing by a score of 5-17 to 1-3. Niall, who helps his father run the famed Sagesse Charolais herd in his home county, is used to success with the herd boasting an All-Ireland winner every year since 2009.
Niall’s venture against Dublin GAA will not be his last foray against the cream of the GAA crop, as following his exploits on the TG4 series Niall received a call-up to join the Yeats County panel. The Rosses Point native will now do all he can to impress new Sligo manager, Paul Taylor, that he is indeed worthy of wearing the black and white of his home county.
Niall was also featured on our Young Farmer series which you can read in full here.
