14-year-old uses pink silage wrap to create Junk Kouture dress

‘Silage 2019’ inspired 14-year-old Tegan Doherty to create a dress from silage wrap for this year’s Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture competition, writes Catherina Cunnane.

The Buncrana, Co. Donegal native, who was profiled previously as part of our Junior Farmer series, has successfully made it through to the northern regional stage of the fashion competition.

Planning

Speaking to That’s Farming, her mother, Jade Doherty, said: “Tegan has been planning a Junk Kouture entry for years. She always said she wanted to do a farming design.”

“She planned her entry at the beginning of last year with her grandmothers, who were both wonderful dressmakers.”

During last year’s silage season, the teenager asked her grandad to support the #PinkBales campaign, which aims to raise funds for Breast Cancer Ireland.

“There was a little pink wrap left over, but not enough to wrap another bale, so she knew this would be perfect for her dress.”

“Her two grannies, unfortunately, passed away, so she was even more determined to do Junk Kouture, in memory of them. That’s where her name ‘Wrapped in Love’ came from.”

Creative juices

She began working on the project just before Christmas, however, the task proved to be more challenging than she initially expected.

“The silage wrap was very sticky and always creased. She sprayed dry shampoo over the wrap as she pulled it off the roll. The wrap had to be sewn with metal wire and glued to stay in place.”

“She then used old broken jewellery from her grannies and her aunties to cover the top section in sparkles.” She said, ‘who says farming has to be all black and boring?’”Jade added.
