Sheep trade ‘stable’ as kill edges towards 2 million head mark

The sheep trade has been described as “stable” with quotes for quality-assured lambs remaining around €5.30-€5.40/kg this week.

It has been reported that producer groups, are once again, receiving up to €5.50-€5.60/kg. In terms of cull ewes, quotes are remaining steady at €2.60-€2.85/kg.

Throughput

The national sheep kill for the week commencing September 7th stood at 64,149 head, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine’s database.

Breakdown:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 157;
  • Spring lambs: 53,905;
  • Ewes and rams: 10,085;
  • Light lambs: 2

Corresponding week in 2019:

  • Total: 45,700.

Comparison

The cumulative sheep kill now stands at 1,998,628 head (excluding this week’s throughput), which is running 118,245 head higher than the corresponding period last year, when 1,880,382 sheep were slaughtered.

37,000 more lambs/hoggets have been slaughtered this year, while the spring lamb kill has increased by 14,110 head on 2019’s levels.

17,185 fewer ewes and rams have been processed, while 308 fewer light lambs have been killed.
