Semen from Irish Charolais bull exported to France

Semen from Goldstar Othello, who was acquired by K Genetics in a private deal from the Ryan family in Co. Tipperary, has been exported to France, writes Catherina Cunnane.

The March-2018-born Charolais bull is a son of Goldstar Echo – a former National Show Junior Champion. His dam, Goldstar Haidi (out of Theodat), has claimed numerous championship titles including Junior Cow at the National Charolais Show Tullamore.

In a post on social media, Kevin McDermott of K Genetics, said: “We are delighted to announce that 120 doses of semen from GOLDSTAR OTHELLO have been exported to Simon Genetic and will be used in some of the top herds in France this spring.”

“We are not sure, but we think this is the first semen of an Irish Charolais-bred bull to be exported to France.”

“A massive thanks to Goldstar Charolais, Martin Ryan & family for breeding this exceptional young bull!” the post added.

On its website, Simon Genetic him Othello as a bull with a “super top, very good functional skills and excellent breed qualities”. They said they will “distribute this bull all over France” in a joint collaboration with K Genetics.

Introducing French bloodlines to Irish soil

K Genetics – which is based in Inishowen, Co. Donegal – was established in January 2018. The company, which offers semen, breeding advice and embryos, operates nationwide and overseas.

Speaking to That’s Farming, McDermott said: “The Charolais gene pool is getting smaller which means that Irish breeders may experience difficulty when seeking outcross bulls.”

“I had a vision to introduce some of the best French Charolais bloodlines to Irish soil.”
