See a significant rise in the quality of your animal

After the successful launch of ‘Good Gut Health’ for calves earlier this year, Sealac have launched ‘Follow-On Flake’ a new product for cattle and sheep.

The family-run company based outside Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo - that was previously profiled in by That’s Farming - has introduced another seaweed supplement to the market.

Jennifer Dempsey, Director, said, “As the calving season has ended, this follow-on supplement will continue to provide vitamins and minerals to the animals after they come off the milk replacer”.

Deficiency

“Bigger cattle are often deficient in minerals such as copper and iodine, and is naturally present in seaweed, so this product is ideal to put the balance right in the animal” she added.

This new flake is processed in the same way as the milk replacer supplement, with a three-day drying process, although a larger screen is used for this brand. The bigger flake was created to add to crunch or silage.

The recommended amount for cattle is just 10 - 15grams/head/day and for sheep -5grams per head/day will be sufficient to see a significant rise in the quality of your animal as it is specifically formulated and 100% pure organic, containing over 60 minerals and vitamins.

“It stimulates appetite while putting extra vitamins and minerals in the body,” said Jennifer, “It’s a slow-release crop that rejuvenates the skin cells, helps the animal to be more alert” informed Jennifer.

Results

The’ Follow-On Flake’ has been trialled on a farm in Athlone and the farmer has reported that he weaned the calves quicker due to a better appetite and even put his cattle out to pasture earlier.

Some of the animals were taken off the supplement and the Athlone farmer said that he noticed that those animals lost the shine on their coat.

The Sealac company was founded by Martin Dempsey who was working as a pig farmer for the Costello Group. He initially decided to work with seaweed as Billy Costello wanted to take the antibiotics out of the pig business, he found that his drying process was right to do just that.

The entire family are still helping to get the products out to the market as the business is still in its very early stages. Jennifer is Martin’s daughter and she works alongside her sister Rebecca, but they are also supported by Martin’s wife Mhairi and two other daughters who all put many hours of labour into the business.

Every product in the range is all hand-labelled and both neighbours and friends have helped in getting the business initiated.

Information

The ‘Follow-On Flake’ comes in 1.5kg, 8kg and 20kg buckets and can be bought from many agricultural retailers throughout the country or bought online on their website.
