The news comes after “The Co-op”, Tesco, and other retailers in the UK announced a new “British-only” policy to be implemented with Brexit looming.
The move from Sainsbury’s was announced in May but was only put into place yesterday.
The Retailer say they will now only offer customers “quality, tender lamb” and reaffirmed its support to the UK lamb industry.
The retailer is one of the UK’s largest retailers, and makes up 16% of the market.
This could mean bad news for Ireland’s sheep farmers, with sheep prices expected to be affected.
This new “British-only” policy is set to be introduced in more retailers across the UK, creating a serious issue for the Irish meat industry.
