Ronan Gorry (28) on suckler farming, studying at WIT and UCD and his professional career.

Growing up on a 40-suckler cow farm and working on a neighbouring dairy enterprise from a young age sowed the seed for Ronan Gorry (28).

“Both of these experiences had a big influence on me and my career journey,” Ronan told Catherina Cunnane - That’s Farming.

After completing his second-level studies in 2009, the Kilcavan, Co. Laois native enrolled in Waterford IT’s level-7 BSc in Agriculture degree programme.

He then transferred to University College Dublin in 2012 where he specialised in Animal and Crop Production (ACP).

The course’s Professional Work Experience module shaped his career direction as it identified his key areas of interest.

“I completed three-months on a tillage enterprise where I learned a lot about agronomy - an area I had no previous experience in.”

“I went on to work on a local dairy farm for three months which I found the most interesting and rewarding.”

Career Journey

The 28-year-old moved into the corporate world in 2014 after he graduated from UCD.

He secured a position as a purchasing manager at Whites Agri in North Co. Dublin which marked the beginning of his professional career in the agricultural sector.

“I also shadowed the firm’s senior agronomist which was a brilliant opportunity and enjoyable start to my professional career.”

From there, Ronan joined John Dalton & Sons LTD - a grain and agricultural merchant in Co. Kilkenny.

“I was on the road full-time as a sales executive and agronomist dealing with dairy, beef, tillage and sheep farmers.”

Terra NutriTECH & Terra Services

Ronan still resides in Co. Kilkenny and is Terra NutriTECH & Terra Services’ Sales Executive for Ireland since June 2018.

TERRA NutriTECH began life in 2012 as TERRA Liquid Minerals when brothers Tom and Padraig Hennessy recognised a lack of progression in the minerals industry and developed an intelligent mineral dosing system.

In 2017, they expanded operations by constructing a new manufacturing facility to produce customised liquid minerals.

In September 2018, TERRA Liquid Minerals rebranded to TERRA NutriTECH and today, TERRA NutriTECH is a global company backed by science and innovation.

Further expansion is underway with the development of a new office block and a holding yard for their magnesium and mineral products.

Growing the business across the Irish dairy and beef sectors and customer relationship management are integral parts of Ronan’s role with Terra NutriTECH.

Job Satisfaction

His main responsibilities at Terra Services, include reviewing and designing water systems for farmers, surveying farms and suggesting necessary upgrades that will benefit a farmer’s herd.

Ronan also works with existing customers analysing their herd health status, advising them on forage quality and ensuring their herd receives adequate minerals at appropriate stages.

“I travel across the country four days per week and spend one day in the office in Moone, Co. Kildare organising my week ahead.”

“It is very enjoyable to work alongside some of Ireland’s top dairy farmers knowing that Terra NutriTECH’s service is benefiting their herd's health status.”

Ronan said it is “reassuring” when a farmer sees a return on their investment in new technology. “Assisting a farmer to reduce his/her workload if there is a certain issue which we can help to solve or prevent from happening in the future is very rewarding.”

“There is a buzz around the dairy industry and with agtec within the industry, it's exciting to be involved with a farmer’s route to expansion or a new entrant.”

As expected, Ronan is presented with an array of different enterprises, systems and farming practices on a daily basis.

“Every farmer I deal with will have a different question. One challenging part of a farm call can be working out how to incorporate our mineral system to the existing pipework on the farm but it's enjoyable.”

Other commitments

Along with maintaining his full-time role, Ronan - a passionate cattle breeder - continues to farm part-time alongside his father.

He also plays football for his local club - Kilcavan GAA - and furthered his studies in 2017 by undertaking a Professional Diploma in Integrated Pest Management & Sustainable use of Pesticides at UCD.

Future Plans

Ronan’s main aim is to progress his career with Terra NutriTECH by being “an integral part of their future growth and development.”

“Working with Terra is exciting as they continue to grow and expand their business across Ireland and globally.”

“I believe in up-skilling so I would also like to further my education in ruminant nutrition.” He concluded.
