As a result of ongoing intelligence-led operations, Revenue officers made a substantial seizure on Tuesday (May 6th).
Officers discovered 8.4 million illegal cigarettes that were concealed in a container at Dublin Port.
Smuggled tobacco
A spokesperson from Revenue said the smuggled goods were concealed behind pallets of frozen chicken in a refrigerated shipping container, which arrived aboard a vessel from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
The cigarettes, branded ‘Richmond’, have an estimated value of €4.1 million, representing a loss to the exchequer of €3.51 million. Investigations into the discovery are ongoing.
This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.
Businesses or members of the public who may have any information regarding illegal cigarettes are asked to contact revenue in confidence.
