Over thirty pedigree Limousin stock are set to go under the hammer at Gort Co-operative mart October 25th, as part of the “Ruan Limousin Reduction Sale”.
Ruan Limousine is a pedigree Limousin herd run by the Lyons family in Co. Clare. Formerly a dairy enterprise, the farm was originally set up by Sean back in 1995 after it was decided a change in enterprise was needed. They subsequently purchased ten of the best quality Limousin heifers from sales throughout the country.
“We started with ten of the best heifers we could find.” Sean said.
The herd has had significant success on the show circuit since its introduction, boasting winners from the Ploughing Championships, The Tullamore show and the majority of the country’s top agricultural shows.
“We haven’t showed in a few years, but the herd is well-known,” Joseph explained.
“We won the National Ploughing championships at one stage and pretty much whatever was there to win when we were showing.” He added.
The team are now set to host the “Ruan Limousin Reduction sale”, with over thirty animals on offer from the herd which is a registered participant of the Limo Leader Health status, herd health programme.
“We are just looking to reduce numbers.” Joseph explained.
The Sale -
As mentioned, the sale will take place on Thursday October 25th at Gort Co-operative mart in Co. Galway.
The sale will commence at 7:30pm sharp, with over 35 animals set to go under the hammer. Leading the sales will be 30 Pedigree Limousine breeding heifers, ranging in age from 12 to 24 months. The heifers are ranging in Euro star ratings from 4-5 stars and are all docile and good quality animals.
“There will be thirty breeding heifers, aged from 12-24months old.” Joseph explained to That’sFarming.
“They are all between four and five stars…They are all easy calving and extremely docile. They are high-quality replacement, milky heifers which we would love to keep, but we can’t keep them all.” He continued.
Although the breeding heifers are the main focus of the reduction sale, the Lyons family are also offering for sale two first-calving Springers with heifer calves at foot. The calves will be a month old at the time of sale.
Other Entries -
This is not all of the stock that will be offered to farmers on the day either, with the Ruan natives also adding their stock bull and four young breeding bulls to the catalogue.
“We are going to bring a selection of four young breeding bulls also.” Joseph noted.
The farmers will offer their four-and-a-half-year-old stock bull for sale at Gort Co-operative mart, who is rated five stars and €181 on the terminal index.
“We are also going to be selling the stock bull as well. He is an Objat bull… He is four-and-a-half years old and has been very successful for us.” Sean noted.
“He is a full five-star replacement bull and is one of the highest in the country for Terminal, at €181 on the Terminal Index.” He added.
