Prices fall as supply meets demand for sheep

Last weeks throughput saw a drop of almost 33% in comparison to the same stage last year, falling from 51,908 in week 20 of 2019 to 34,627.

Total throughput for the year remains strong, however, with numbers up by 32,467 from the same stage last year.

Last week’s throughput:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 7,670;
  • Spring lambs: 22,444;
  • Ewes and rams: 4,513;
  • Light lambs: 0;
  • Total: 34,627.

Cumulative (excludes this week’s throughput):

  • Lambs/hoggets: 763,651;
  • Spring lambs: 75,422;
  • Ewes and rams: 116,280;
  • Light lambs: 28;
  • Total: 955,381.

Corresponding week last year:

  • Lambs/hoggets: 20,233;
  • Spring lambs: 24,398;
  • Ewes and rams: 7,277;
  • Light lambs: 0;
  • Total: 51,908.

Last year’s throughput:

Prices:

It has been reported that supply has met demand in the sheep sector, which is evident as prices for hoggets fell to €5.50-€5.60/kg – a drop of 10c/kg from the previous week.

Spring lamb prices remained the same as they earned €6.20-€6.30/kg. Ewes sold for a price of €2.60-€2.80/kg, dropping by 10c/kg.
