Earlier this week, Minister Denis Naughten announced that a nationwide ban on smoky coal will come into effect next year, from the heating season, which is Autumn 2018.
This move will make Ireland the first country in Europe to extend the ban nationwide, after a ban on the sale of smoky coal was first introduced in Dublin in 1990. Research has shown this that resulted in 350 fewer deaths per year throughout the city.
