The farming world is in a state of shock since the weekend’s shocking revelations of rotten Brazilian meat being exported for consumption to Europe.
The story has made headlines globally and led to widespread condemnation with farm groups, politicians and farmers themselves calling for an outright ban on Brazilian meat coming into Europe.
Operation Weak Flesh was launched in the early hours of Friday in 6 Brazilian states after a 2 year investigation.
Raids were carried out on 194 locations with 1000 officers.
Some processor factory managers attempted to bribe health inspectors and politicians to get their certificates for produce the investigation has also revealed.
JBS the world largest beef exporter has also been included in the more than 30 companies implicit in unhygienic practices.
"They used acid and other chemicals to mask the aspect of the product. In some cases, the products used were carcinogenic," the police said.
In other cases, potato, water and even cardboard paper was mixed with chicken meat to increase profits.
JBS has a net revenue of some $55bn and exports to some 150 countries.
