Photos: Local farmers help extinguish forest fires

Sligo Fire Services experienced “one of its busiest 24 hours” when it was called to battle two large forest fires in Dromore West and Culleens near Enniscrone this week.

All resources in the county were committed to bring the blazes under control, according to a spokesperson for Sligo Fire Services.

In a post on social media, the spokesperson said: “Appreciation and thanks to our neighbouring Brigades, Mayo, Leitrim and Donegal for their support.”

“Also huge thanks to Coillte personnel, local farmers for ferrying water and local communities.”

“Many challenges were faced and overcome, our service also responded to three house/apartments fires – one involved the rescue of a family dog from the fire – within this period and also providing assistance to a gorse fire in Mayo.”

“Stay safe everyone – test your smoke detectors – be cautious and vigilant.” the social media post concluded.
