An organic cheese produced in Ireland has been recalled from the market, due to the presence of a potentially dangerous bacteria.
The cheese in question was Organic Irish Cheddar from the Little Milk Company. The company produce a range of different cheddars and soft cheeses as well as types of brie. It is a ten family run business in Leinster/Munster.
The bacteria in question is called Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause food poisoning. It can be very dangerous, especially for pregnant women and the elderly if ingested. In fact the bacteria can cause infection, in pregnant women, which can lead to miscarriage. It can also lead to the newborn baby having a serious infection or being stillbirth.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland says the bacteria is dangerous due to it’s ability to survive and thrive in low temperatures.
